Bees are vital to our food systems and global economy—as pollinators, they are responsible for the creation of nearly 1/3 of all food and up to 90% of all wild plants on Earth. Since 2001 nearly 1/3 of all bee colonies disappear annually due to CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder). When factors of pesticide and monoculture farms are mixed, pathogens and parasites are easily spread amongst the bee populations. Beekeep aims to curb CCD by empowering the bee population through a network of maintained urban hives.
Current apiaries are prone to CCD because of cluster population and proximity of the hives. A distributed network of hives promotes a resilient bee population and in turn effectively reduces risk of CCD spread.
Sensors within each pod notify when maintenance is necessary or when honey harvest is ready. The hive network is supported and maintained via drones.
